Abstract

Diabetes of the Young Maturity Onset (MODY), is a form of pancreatic beta cell defect due to genetic mutations. Until now there have been more than 10 mutations of the gene phenotype underlying the occurrence of MODY. MODY concerning a person in young onset usually in decade 2 and is closely related to a strong history of diabetes in the family. MODY is reported as the most common form of monogenic diabetes and affects 1-2% of all diabetic patients in Europe. Recent studies have reported the prevalence of MODY 21-45 / 1,000,000 children and 100 / 1,000,000 adults. It has been determined that 5% of individuals diagnosed with diabetes before the age of 45 have MODY, with 80% of individuals misdiagnosed as having type 1 (T1DM) or type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). People with MODY may only have symptoms of mild or no diabetes and hyperglycemia found during routine blood tests. MODY is often too late to diagnose and even misdiagnosis because it is not characteristic so caution is needed in making a diagnosis. The standard standard for MODY examination is using gene analysis. Therapy that can be given is based on the type of MODY where each type has its own clinical characteristics. In MODY 2 and 4 diet management can be carried out compared to other types of MODY that require anti-diabetes drugs or insulin.
