Abstract

Decaf coffee is a low-caffeine coffee that requires an extra process of time and cost so that the price is quite expensive. Decaf coffee is usually traded in ground roasted and it is very difficult to distinguish between the two with the naked eyes. Therefore in this study, UV-Vis spectroscopy was used combined with Partial least squares (PLS) regression to detect the adulteration of decaf coffee with non-decaf coffee. Each sample has 1 gram weight. Total sample were 100 samples. The composition of decaf and non dekaf = 10%: 90%, 20%: 80%, 30%: 70%, 40%: 60%, 50%: 50 %, 60%: 40%, 70%: 30%, 80%: 20%, 90%: 10%, and 100% pure decaf. In this study PLS regression was used with The Unscrambler version 9.2 to develop PLS model. The best PLS calibration model was obtained for the Savitzky-Golay Smoothing and SNV spectra in the range of 250-450 nm. This model has the coefficient of determination R2 kal = 0,99 and R2 val = 0,98, RPD = 6,61 and PLS factor (F) = 2. While SEC = 2,1% and SEP = 4, 4% with the lowest SEC and SEP difference of 2,3% could be obtained by paired t-test at 95% confidence level, it can be proved that actual and predicted percentage of decaf coffee content was not significantly different.
