Abstract

Mangrove ecosystems have important ecological functions, including as a barrier against abrasion, habitat for aquatic biota, carbon sinks, and supporting the economy of coastal communities. However, the mangrove area in Labuhan Maringgai District has experienced serious degradation due to land conversion, coastal abrasion, and uncontrolled pressure from coastal community activities. Monitoring of mangrove conditions can be done using remote sensing technology. This study aims to compare the performance of the NDVI, GNDVI, and SAVI vegetation indices in detecting mangrove land cover density quickly and accurately, as well as reclassifying and estimating changes in mangrove cover area for the period 2013–2025. This study was conducted in February 2025 in Labuhan Maringgai District, East Lampung Regency, Lampung. The methods used include analysis of Landsat 8 satellite imagery with NDVI, GNDVI, and SAVI processing, complemented by field validation through Ground Truth Points (GTP). The results showed that NDVI with a cubic regression model had the highest accuracy in detecting mangrove density with an R² value of 0.978 and an F of 237.969. Meanwhile, GNDVI and SAVI were more efficient using a linear model because it is simple but stable. Reclassification of the vegetation index map showed that mangrove cover in East Lampung Regency experienced fluctuating dynamics, with an increase in 2015–2017 but a drastic decline since 2019 until reaching its lowest point in 2025 due to anthropogenic pressure and coastal abrasion.
