Abstract
Sweet corn (Zea mays var.saccharata Sturt.) with nutrition and sweet taste is a favorite consumption in Indonesia. However, sweet corn production not fulfilled consumer demand because it is susceptible to downy mildew and corn blight. In addition, efforts to expand sweet corn plants in ultisol land in Lampung still require adaptive technology, including the provision of soil enhancers in the form of biochar. Biochar in dry land supports increasing the ability of the soil to store water and nutrients, increasing soil friability, reducing evaporation of water from the soil and reducing the rate of infection of important corn diseases such as downy mildew and blight. This study aims to determine the effect of the type and dose of biochar and determine the best type and dose of biochar with or without phosphate fertilizer that can reduce the the incidence and severity sweet corn blight. The research was carried out from August to October 2021, followed by February to October 2022 at the Integrated Field Laboratory of the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Lampung. The research was arranged in the Randomized Block Design namely 10 tons ha-1 rice husk biochar and phosphate fertilizer, 20 tons ha-1 rice husk biochar without phosphate fertilizer, 10 tons ha-1 coconut shell biochar and phosphate fertilizer, 20 tons ha-1 coconut shell biochar without phosphate fertilizer, 10 tons ha-1 cassava stem biochar and phosphate fertilizer,20 tons ha-1 cassava stem biochar without phosphate fertilizer, each repeated three times. The results showed that biochar treatment could reduce the incidence and severity of sweet corn leaf blight with or without addition phosphate fertilizer and 10 tons ha-1 biochar made from cassava stems, 20 tons ha-1 biochar made from cassava stems and 20 tons ha-1 coconut shells without or with the addition of phosphate fertilizer can reduce the intensity of leaf blight in line with the increase in peroxidase enzyme activity.
