Abstract
Sustainability standards and certifications have become a trend in the coffee trade on the international market. Building on the foundation of the Theory of Change, sustainability and certification standards aim to enhance the economic, social and environmental sustainability of coffee. Although the literature on sustainability standards and certification is quite rich, studies evaluating them comprehensively are rare. The aim of this paper is to categorize the studies by theme and, based on existing knowledge gaps, provide recommendations for further research. This study used a qualitative approach and the research method was literature review. The review found that most of the studies were conducted using macro and managerial approaches, and knowledge gaps still exist in the literature. It is necessary to change the approach in future studies to address this knowledge gap. Further research is suggested to use micro-level analysis and bottom-up perspective (based on farmer's perspective) to generate empirical knowledge about social, economic, and environmental aspects of sustainability standards and certification.
