Abstract

Cocoa seed (Theobroma cacao L.) is a plant seed that has a pulp layer. Pulp needs to be removed so as not to invite microorganisms or insects that can cause damaged seeds and difficult to germinate. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of the concentration of CaCO3 and the composition of the best growing media, as well as the interaction of the two on the growth of cocoa seedlings. This research was carried out at the plastic house of Labuhan Dalam Village, Tanjung Senang District, Bandar Lampung and the Plant Science Laboratory, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Lampung, Gedong Meneng, Bandar Lampung in September-December 2020. This research was arranged in a factorial completely randomized block design (5x3). The first factor is the concentration of CaCO3 solution consisting of 0 g/l, 25 g/l, 50 g/ l, 75 g/l, and 100 g/l. The second factor was the composition of the nursery media which consisted of a mixture of sand + manure, husk charcoal + manure, and sand + husk charcoal + manure. The research data were analyzed for variance and then continued with the BNT test at the 5% level. The results showed that the planting media had a significant effect on all growth variables of cocoa seedlings with the highest yields being the composition of the growing media of sand, husk charcoal, and manure. The concentration of CaCO3 solution significantly affected the variables of plant height, number of leaves, stem diameter, crown fresh weight, and quality index of fresh seeds with the highest yield at a concentration of 75 g/l CaCO3 solution. There was no interaction between the combination of planting media and the concentration of CaCO3 solution on the growth and quality of cocoa seedlings.
