Abstract

A pressure vessel is a closed container designed to store liquids or gases at a temperature different from the ambient temperature and is used for a variety of applications in various industries. One type of pressure vessel that is widely used is the vertical cylindrical pressure vessel with lug supports. The support lug of a cylindrical pressure vessel is usually attached to the outer wall of the cylinder with a pad using a fillet weld. For such a junction, the vessel and pad are not perfectly integrated, but there are initial cracks inherent in the vessel and pad interfaces. For repeated loads, these cracks may propagate to the weld, eventually causing the joint structure to fail. This research was conducted using finite element simulations to assess stress on vessels and pads. The limit load for welding on the vertical (axial) side is compared with the limit load for welding on the vertical and horizontal sides. The change in stress distribution and maximum stress with welding on the vertical and horizontal sides is compared with the results of welding on the vertical side only. In this simulation it is assumed that the load is only the weight of the vessel itself, no other loads are involved. This simulation uses the ANSYS 2019 R3 finite element software with solid elements (SOLID187). The material used for the support lug is SA 516 Gr 70 and it is assumed to behave as elastic perfectly plastic. The results show that for welding only on the vertical side, the resulting limit load is 54889 kN. The shear strain that occurs on the radial-axial (SXY) faces is greater than that of the other faces. The highest von Mises stress is 1.325 times the yield stress of the welding material. The addition of welds on the horizontal side causes the load limit to increase to 55191 kN. There was an increase in the limit load by 301.6 kN. However, the shear strain was greater on the radial-axial (XZ) and hoop-axial (YZ) faces. The stress that occurs in the weld pad and vessel actually increases to 1,660 times the yield stress of the weld material. The stress that occurs in the circumferential direction (SY) is greater than the stress that occurs in the longitudinal direction (SZ). Application of the weld on the horizontal side reduces the stress on the top end of the weld compared to only applying the weld to the vertical side.
