Abstract

Abstract — Pahawang Island is one of the gray langur habitats. The decreasing habitat due to land conversion causes gray langurs to feed on community-owned agroforestry. This causes people to regard gray langurs as pests, and even people hunt to drive them out and capture them. The purpose of the study was to determine people's perceptions of the presence of gray langurs on Pahawang Island. The study was conducted using the method of direct observation and open interviews using questionnaires. The results showed 100% of the community considered gray langurs as a pest. 68% of the people already knew that gray langur was one of the protected primates and 32% did not know gray langur was protected. The community-owned plants that are eaten and damaged by gray langurs are 88% bananas, 85% coconuts, 10% petai, rambutan 5%, cocoa & cassava 15%, and jengkol, chili, and long beans respectively 12%. The negative perception of the people of Pahawang Island regarding gray langurs is that gray langurs eat and damage community-owned plants. Keywords— Public perception, Gray langur pest, Pahawang Island.
