Abstract
A perception significantly affects a person's behavior concerning their environment. A person who has a proper perception involving forest conservation is expected to behave positively towards environmental conservation efforts. Hence, perception can affect people in deciding their attitudes and behavior to take an active role and participate in protecting the forest and the ecological functions. In other words, as one of the buffer villages in BBSNP, the perceptions of the Margomulyo village community can affect efforts to preserve BBSNP. Consequently, the perception of the buffer village community is indispensable to determine the level of people's awareness of forest sustainability, which has a vital ecological function in maintaining the balance of the ecosystem. The objectives of this study were: 1) Knowing the level of community perception, and 2) Knowing the relationship of social characteristics to community perceptions about the ecological function of the BBSNP forest. This research was conducted in Margomulyo Village, Semaka District, Tanggamus Regency, in March - April 2020. The data was collected through direct observation and interviews with 60 purposive sampling respondents. Moreover, the technique used to take a sample of respondents was by using random sampling. This research used the Spearman Rank correlation analysis to find out the relationship between social characteristics and people's perceptions. The results of this study indicated that community perceptions of the ecological function of forests tended to be high, with details of environmental aspects (3.8 Likert scales), economic aspects (3.7 Likert scales), and socio-cultural aspects (3.5 Likert scales). The social characteristics or individual factors that have a positive and significant correlation are the age factor, explicitly at 0.465, and a significance value of 0.007, and the level of formal education with a correlation value of 0.816 * and a significance value of 0.005. Keywords: Community perception, Ecological function, Bukit Barisan Selatan National Park, Margomulyo Village
