Abstract

The algorithm that is often used for land cover analysis is the vegetation index algorithm. Vegetation index is the amount of vegetation greenness value that obtained from digital signal processing of brightness value data. From various existing vegetation index algorithms, the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) algorithm and the Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) algorithm are often used for monitoring vegetation. To find out the density of mangrove land, it can be used a comparison between two algorithms in order to get a vegetation index algorithm that has a better accuracy. Data analysis method that used in this research are Landsat 8 satellite image data, which is carried out by the pre- processing process to the transformation process of NDVI vegetation index and EVI that resulting a level of mangrove density. Then, the land verification was carried out by taking a mangrove canopy density photographs with hemispherical photography method. Henceforth, the accuracy test used confusion matrix method. This research found that the value of NDVI vegetation index range from 0.19 until 0.76. While the value of EVI vegetation index range from -0.11 until 1.03. The results from the confusion matrix calculation, the accuracy value for the NDVI method was 73.68% totality, while the accuracy value from the EVI method was 84.21% totality. So, it can be concluded that the EVI method has a higher accuracy value than the NDVI method if applied to find out a mangrove density level.
