Abstract

The Sumatran elephant (Elephas maximus sumatranus) is a protected animal and has an important role in protecting forest ecosystems whose habitat begins to decrease opening up forest areas to facilitate human and elephant conflict in the buffer zone increases. The purpose of this research was to determine the trained and utilization of elephants in supporting the performance of national parks in the Elephant Response Unit of the National Park Management Unit Region II Way Kambas National Park in February 2019. This research uses participant observation methods, interviews and data analysis using descriptive qualitative methods which are constructed into hypotheses and theories. The results of this research indicate that elephant training is applied based on elephant training criteria in the Elephant Response Unit and training techniques totaling 47 consisted of 24 verbal (commands) and 23 annunciation. Trained elephants are utilized in activities monitoring patrols and human elephant conflict mitigation. Achievement of the Elephant Response Unit in human elephant conflict mitigation and patrols has a positive impact on program users in accordance with the objectives of its formation.
