Abstract
Ionic liquids (ILs) are liquid salts at room temperature which can dissolve cellulose efficiently. However ILs are toxic to microorganisms and therefore it inhibits ethanol fermentation from biomass. We have developed a new type of ionic liquid; a carboxylic acid-type liquid zwitterion (OE2imC3C), which satisfy both low toxicity and dissolution of cellulose. The characteristics allow a one-pot conversion process of biomass into ethanol via pretreatment, hydrolysis, and fermentation. However, the OE2imC3C has a problem: high viscosity. In this study, a co-solvent, dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), was added to decrease the viscosity. Pure OE2imC3C dissolved cellulose at 100 ºC (Figure1). However, after dissolving 6% of cellulose, the solution could not be stirred anymore due to its high viscosity. Consequently, we could not confirm whether over 6 wt% of cellulose can be dissolved or not. Here, DMSO enhanced the dissolution of cellulose: OE2imC3C with 40 wt% of DMSO can dissolve cellulose up to 14 wt%. Dissolution ability of OE2imC3C/DMSO mixtures decreased when over 40 wt% of DMSO was added.
