Abstract

Quality seedlings are needed to increase the success rate of land reclamation and rehabilitation activities. Good quality seedlings are of superior genetic, physical, and physiological; therefore, they can adapt to critical environments. Seedlings are considered good quality if they have normal growth, have straight trunks, and are healthy and free from pests and diseases. One method to provide quality seedlings is by developing a nursery like that of PT Natarang Mining. However, the seedlings produced by this nursery are still of low quality due to attacks by pests and diseases. Therefore, this study intends to investigate the pests and diseases in the nursery of PT Natarang Mining. Data were collected by random sampling with a sampling intensity of 10%, or approximately 1,210 forest plant seedlings used. Subsequently, observations were carried out on the forest plant seedlings to see whether pests and diseases caused defects. The results show that the pests and diseases that attack plant seedlings in the nursery forest of PT Natarang Mining are dominated by snail pests (26%) and leaf spot disease (16%). These conditions can be overcome in several ways, including by implementing thinning activities and using plant-based insecticides and fungicides such as garlic extract, neem leaves, and others. Pest and disease control can also be done by using chemicals such as fungicides with active ingredients of benomyl and sulfur.
