Abstract

Abstract: Ambivalence is a phenomenon that places and rejects one culture in the face of another. Ambivalence is always related to the imitation of the natives towards the colonialists. Ambivalence is the impact of the culture and mindset of the colonizers. The purpose of this study is to reveal the ambivalence of indigenous figures in the colonial period in Pidi Baiq's Helen and Sukanta using postcolonial perspectives and their implications for the study of literature in senior high schools (SMA). This research is a type of descriptive qualitative research with the data source being the novel Helen and Sukanta by Pidi Baiq. Through these data sources, data is obtained in the form of phenomena in the novel Helen and Sukanta by Pidi Baiq which contain character ambivalence. Data collection is done by reading and note technique. The data is then analyzed with interactive data analysis techniques. The results showed that the character Sukanta (Ukan) as an indigenous character experienced symptoms of ambivalence. Even though Sukanta (Ukan) lived side by side and even had a close relationship with the Dutch and were able to speak Dutch, Sukanta (Ukan) were still considered natives who were always under the Dutch. The results of the analysis of the colonialism phenomenon in the novel can then be used as Indonesian language teaching materials that are oriented towards strengthening national character. Keywords: ambivalence, colonial, postcolonial, teaching materials
