Abstract

The growth of weeds in oil palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) plants can be detrimental to plant growth so it needs to be controlled. One alternative to control weeds is using paraquat dichloride herbicide. This study aimed to determine the effect of paraquat dichloride herbicide on weeds in oil palm plantations. The research was carried out from September to November 2022 in Sido Mukti Village, Natar District, South Lampung Regency and the Lampung University Weed Science Laboratory. The study used a randomized block design (RBD) with 6 treatments and 4 replications. The treatment set was Paraquat dichloride 276 g/l dose 621 g/ha, 828 g/ha, 1,035 g/ha, 1,242 g/ha ha, manual weeding, and untreatment (without weed control). The homogeneity test of the variety of data was carried out using the Barlett test, the additivity test using the Tukey test. If the assumption conditions are met, then the data is analyzed by means of variance and to test the difference in mean values is done by the Least Significant Difference (LSD) test at the 5% level. The results showed that the herbicide paraquat dichloride at a dose of 621 – 1,242 g/ha was effective in controlling the growth of total weeds, broadleaf weeds, dominant weeds Praxelis clematidea, Borreria alata, and Paspalum conjugatum. Meanwhile, at a dose level of 828 – 1,242 g/ha, it was effective in controlling grass weeds, dominant weeds Digitaria ciliaris, and Eleusine indica. The community coefficient (C) at 4 and 8 weeks after application showed a value of <75%, indicating a difference in the composition of the treatments communities. Application of the herbicide paraquat dichloride to immature oil palm circles does not cause phytotoxicity on oil palm trees.
