Abstract

Seagrass ecosystems are not widely known by the public, even though they have many benefits for human welfare, both ecologically, socially and economically. The objective of this study is analyzing the economic value of seagrass ecosystem and fish resources linkages. The study conducted in three villages: Berakit, Malang Rapat and Teluk Bakau villages which directly boundaries with the seagrass bed conservation area of Bintan Regency. Economic analysis of the relationship between seagrass ecosystems and fish resources was carried out using the coefficient of seagrass carrying capacity approach.. The result shows that seagrass ecosystem provide habitat and fish production services. Every additional one hectare of seagrass ecosystem could improve the carrying capacity of their waters to support fish resources amounted 9,049.3 kilograms or equivalent to habitat value IDR 166,963,204.72 per hectare per year. The economic value of seagrass ecosystem and fish resources linkages amounted IDR 97,764,000 per hectare, meaning that the economic loss of seagrass as their capacity to provide fish production amounted IDR 97,764,000 per year. Both of this value might become consideration for policy maker, especially in measuring fish resources asset and the potency of seagrass habitat economic loss.
