Abstract

One of the potential uses of oil palm empty fruit bunches (TKKS) as fuel is through conversion into pellets. However, pellets still have drawbacks because they are still easy to absorb moisture and the calorific value is still low not far from the original material. Torrefaction is a thermochemical process that can improve the quality of biomass pellets. This study aimed to determine the effect of torrefaction on changes in the properties of EFB pellets. Pellet torrefaction was carried out using a rotary tube reactor. The combination of torrefaction temperature (220, 240, and 260 °C) and torrefaction time (15, 25, and 35 minutes) was performed with three replications. Parameters observed included water content, water absorption, and lignocellulosic content. Results showed that torrefaction process succeeded in reducing the moisture content of the pellets from 10.57% (control) to less than 4%. Torrefaction also decreased the cellulose content and increased the lignin content of the pellets. The torrefaction process produced more hydrophobic pellets characterized by lower moisture absorption as compared to those of without torrefaction. The moisture absorption test showed that the higher the torrefaction temperature resulted in pellets with slower moisture absorption, which meant that the pellets were more hydrophobic.
