Abstract

This research aims to describe the types of student errors in solving set problems and their causative factors. The subjects of this research consisted of 18 students of class VII-A and 21 students of class VII-D of SMP Negeri 1 Natar in the academic year of 2019/2020 who had participated in learning of the set material and all stages of the research. Learning the set material in each class uses the learning design of didactic design A in grades VII-A and didactic design B in grades VII-D. The didactic design A is a didactic design with group learning methods, teaching aids, and student worksheets, while the didactic design B is a didactic design with individual learning methods but does not use teaching aids and student worksheets. Data collection is done through tests and interviews. The research data is analyzed through 3 stages, namely data redactions, data presentation, and conclusions withdrawal. The results showed that: the errors made by the research subjects included 3 errors: (1) errors of concept; (2) errors of drawing conclusions; (3) careless mistakes. The number of errors in the didactic design class B is more than the didactic design class A, except for careless errors. Factors that cause errors include not understanding the material related to the problem, not being careful in reading and understanding the information on the question, not being careful in answering questions and drawing conclusions, and being unable to apply the concepts that have been studied and understood.
