Abstract
Grafted black pepper is a grafting of Piper nigrum with Piper colubrinum as rootstock which has advantages in terms of resistance to root rot disease, excess water stress, and strong growth. This study aims to determine effect of kind of Piper plant (black pepper, Piper colubrinum, and grafted black pepper cutting), watersaturated nursery system, and its interaction on the growth of cutting. This study used a factorial Randomized Block Design (RAK) with two factors and three replications. The first factor is the type of Piper plant consisting of black pepper, Piper colubrinum, and grafted black pepper. The second factor was watersaturated nursery system consisting of polybags without being flooded, flooded, and flooded + foliar fertilizers. The results showed that the Piper colubrinum cuttings gave a good growth response to watersaturated conditions, namely the treatment of polybags being flooded with water and polybags being flooded + fertilizer, indicated by the variables of plant height, stem diameter, leaf area, shoot dry weight, and seedling quality index. Piper colubrinum cuttings grown in polybags flooded with water + fertilizer gave the best growth. Roots of grafted black pepper cuttings grew faster than black pepper cuttings, based on the variable number of roots and fresh root weight. Roots of grafted black pepper and Piper colubrinum cuttings showed more tolerance to water saturation stress. As the interaction of rootstock and scion, the root growth of grafted black pepper was between that of black pepper and Piper colubrinum. Keywords: Black pepper, grafting, Piper colubrinum, water saturated nursery
