Abstract
A mixture of oil and chemicals in surfactants that are discharged directly into the environment will result in a decrease in soil fertility and inhibit the degradation process by microorganisms. Therefore, natural compounds are needed that can increase the solubility of used cooking oil in water such as biosurfactants. One of the bacteria that produce biosurfactants is Serratia marcescens. This study aims to determine the biosurfactant activity of bacteria from Serratiamarcescens strain MBC 1 grown in tryptone water fermentationmedia, corn wastewater, and cassava liquid waste with pH 6.7 and8. The tests carried out included emulsification, oil displacement, and drop collapse tests. The results showed that the biosurfactant ofSerratia marcescens strain MBC 1 was able to increase thesolubility of used cooking oil in water. Production results on corn waste media with a pH of 7 showed the most optimum emulsificationactivity, which was 49.26%
