Abstract

The study aims to investigate the histological characterization of early gonadal development and sex differentiation in snakehead juvenile which is still unknown. Approximately 100 larvae at seven days post-hatch were stocked in three 50-liter tank at 25°C and reared for up to 6 months. First larvae sample was collected at 0.5 month, then the next samples were collected monthly for histological analyses. At half month, the sex was undifferentiated with primordium consisting of a few germ cells surrounded by enveloping somatic cells. The first signs of ovarian differentiation were observed from 1.5 months onward. They include the onset of meiotic activity in newly formed oocytes, which is soon accompanied by increased oogonial mitotic proliferation and the somatic reorganization of the presumptive ovary. The ovarian cavity is completely formed by 2.5 months. Numerous follicles containing perinucleolar oocytes are observed by 3.5months. On the other hand, the first signs of testicular differentiation are not observed until 3 months age. By months 3.5, the appearance of spermatogonial cells in the gonad was observed. Interestingly, at five months we found some gonad shows a transition features with disappearance of perinucleolar oocytes and presence of spermatogonia. It indicates that organization of testis is evident. The latest stage of spermatogenesis observed by this time of testicular development is stages II. These finding indicate that sex differentiation in Channa striata was observed earlier in females than in males, suggesting that this species can be classified as gonochorist undifferentiated.
