Abstract

The downy mildew in Lampung province was originally identified as being caused by one species. Recent reports report that downy mildew on maize is caused by several Peronosclerospora species. This study aims to determine the characteristics of Peronosclerospora sp. includes conidia density, conidia viability, sprout length, and oospora diameter. The study also aimed to determine the species of the three isolates and calculate the downy mildew disease incidence from several isolates. This research was conductedfrom November 2017 to February 2018 in the Hajimena agricultural area, Natar Subdistrict, SouthLampung and in the Plant Disease Laboratory, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Lampung. This research uses the field survey method and observations in the laboratory. The field survey was carried outon maize-affected corn plantations in three locations, namely Bandar Jaya, Srikaton and Sukaraja Nuban. This research was conducted by observing maize plants showing symptoms of downy mildew, then observed conidial density, conidial viability, sprouts length, oospora diameter, identifying the three species of isolates and calculating the disease incidence of downy mildew. The results showed that the Peronosclerospora sp. in the three isolates, P. sorghi. P. sorghi isolate Bandar Jaya has a conidia density of 5.05 x 105, conidia viability of 29.51%, sprout length of 0.039 mm, oospora diameter of 0.021 mm, and the disease incidence 31.67%. P. sorghi Srikaton isolate has a conidia density of 3.93 x 105, conidia viability of 24.99%, sprout length of 0.046 mm, oospora diameter 0.022 mm, and the disease incidence 35.46%. P. sorghi isolate Sukaraja Nuban has a conidia density of 4.60 x 105, conidia viability of 14.15%, sprout length of 0.039 mm, oospora diameter 0.021 mm, and the disease incidence 33.82%.
