Abstract

Four compounds betulinic acid, 7,4’-dihydroxy-2’- methoxyisoflavan, 3-hydroxy-9-methoxypterocarpan and 7-hydroxy-2’,4’-dimethoxyisoflavan were separated from the roots of Sesbania grandiflora. Structure elucidation of the compounds was determined using UV, IR, MS and NMR spectroscopic techniques. Root extracts and purified compounds were screened for the antibacterial activity by disc-diffusion method against nine bacterial. The activity results of the test components were shown to be dose dependent. The methanol extract displayed the growth inhibition of Streptococcus pyogenes, Bacillus cereus, Staphyloccus aureus and Klebsiella pneumoniae. The acetone extract inhibited the growth of S. pyogenes, B. cereus, S. aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae and K. pneumoniae. The results partially justify the use of S. grandiflora root in traditional medicine to treat diseases caused by bacterial infection.
