Abstract

Introduction: Asthma is a chronic respiratory disease that is often found in children. Its prevalence is increasing both of developed and developing countries including in Indonesia. One of risk factor for the development of asthma is allergic rhinitis. It is an essential and ordinary condition that causes major morbidity in children. Asthma and allergic rhinitis frequently coexist in children, and the presence of allergic rhinitis is related to poorer asthma control. Aim: This study points out the relationship between allergic rhinitis and asthma at elementary school children in Bandar Lampung, Indonesia. Methods: This study was a cross sectional. It was conducted on January 2019 which included 20 public elementary schools in Bandar Lampung, Indonesia. Additionally, 901students 10-12 years old were examined by using validated questionnaires from The International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC) for asthma and allergic rhinitis. Then, the Chi Square test was administered. Results: It showed that the incidence of allergic rhinitis was quite high (41,1%) 370 of all participants. While participants who suffered from asthma were 104 of all participants (11.5%). There were 85 participants (23 %) who suffered allergic rhinitis and also had asthma. Most asthma participants (82 %) also got allergic rhinitis. Furthermore, the Chi Square test showed P value = 0. 000. It indicated that there was a significant relationship between allergic rhinitis and asthma in this population. Conclusions: Allergic rhinitis associated with asthma of elementary school children in Bandar Lampung, Indonesia. It should be regarded as a risk factor for asthma.
