Abstract

Radiation emitted by cellphones can cause oxidative stress by increasing reactive oxygen species (ROS). Tomatoes and zinc function as antioxidants in counteracting free radicals. This study aims to determine whether there is an effect of the combination of zinc and tomato (Solanum lycopersium L.) on the number and viability of Sprague-dawley strain male rats (Rattus norvegicus) which are induced by electromagnetic waves of mobile phones. The study was conducted 1 month at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Lampung. Samples using 25 rats were divided into 5 groups: control group 1 (K1) who were given regular food and drink, control group 2 (K2) who were only given cellphone exposure, treatment group (P1, P2, P3) induced cellphone exposure 2 hours and given a combination of zinc and tomatoes in a row with zinc doses of 0.135 mg, 0.27 mg, and 0.54 mg and tomato doses of 1.85 mg, 3.7 mg, and 7.4 mg. The average number of spermatozoa obtained K1 76 ± 18,166, K2 39 ± 8,649, P1 182,40 ± 32,997, P2 189,60 ± 40,377 and P3 197,60 ± 42,893 and mean viabiltas spermatozoa K1 42,54 ± 5,252, K2 27, 66 ± 8,770, P1 52,68 ± 2,249, P2 54,40 ± 18,518, and P3 67,90 ± 2,103. The One-Way Anova test showed that there were significant differences between groups with viability (p = 0.02) and number (p = 0.00). The conclusion is the effect of giving a combination of tomatoes and zinc to the viability and number of spermatozoa induced by cell phones.
