Abstract

We developed a CO2 laser photoacoustic spectrometer (PAS) with the capability for a multi-component measurement to measure the concentration of three volatile organic compounds (VOCs) of acetone, ethylene, and ammonia. Although acetone has very small or almost no absorption lines in the CO2 laser line regions, our PAS system was able to obtain strong photoacoustic (PA) signals at several CO2 laser lines, with the strongest one being at the 10P20 line. The strength of the PA signal for acetone at 10P20 is comparable to that for ethylene at 10P14 and ammonia at 10R14. We obtained the lowest detection limit for the three VOCs, i.e., acetone, ethylene, and ammonia are 30 ppbv, 22 ppbv, and 12 ppbv, respectively. Furthermore, we then applied the PAS system to measure the VOCs in the breath of three groups of patient, i.e., patients with lung cancer disease, with other lung diseases and healthy ones. The breath samples of the patients were measured from the patients of Dr. Sardjito Hospital in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The ethical committee of Dr. Sardjito Hospital has approved this study. The result shows a significant increase of acetone in the breath of patients with lung cancer compared to others (p-value < 0.01). The satisfactory results clearly demonstrated that the PAS system could be applied as a non-invasive and rapid test of lung cancer.
