Abstract

Research on the electrical characteristics of electrochemical cells with electrolyte of seawater with the addition of NaHCO using Cu-Zn electrodes was carried out. This electrochemical system is designed to be able to replace electrolyte sea water without making electrodes used directly exposed to air. Measurements of electrical characteristics include voltage, current, and power, and luminance produced by 1.2 watt LED loads. This study compared the electrical characteristics of electrochemical cells with and without the addition of NaHCO3. Measurements are carried out for 5 days (120 hours) with electrolyte replacement every 24 hours. The results showed that the electrochemical system with the addition of NaHCO3 was able to turn on the LED for longer (5 days) compared to without the addition of NaHCO3 which was only able to turn on the LED for 3 days. The corrosion rate on Cu-Zn electrodes without the addition of NaHCO3 the longer it is used the greater, whereas with the addition of NaHCO there is no corrosion.
