Abstract

The Fabaceae is the third largest and one of the most economically important families of flowering plants. The nomenclature Fabaceae is related with the term “Legumes”, refers to a large group of angiospermal plants that is found in all the continents. They are used as crops, forages, and green manures. This large family is also known for its variety of compounds, either primary metabolites (lectins, chitinases, numerous proteases and α-amylase inhibitors) or secondary metabolites (flavonoids, alkaloids, terpenoids, tannins and phenolics compounds). The Fabaceae flavonoids play a fundamental role in the adaptation of producer legumes to their biological environments as defensive compounds (phytoalexins) as well as the chemical signals in symbiotic nitrogen with a group of bacteria called rhizobia. Due to their significant role in plant defense and may have beneficial effects on human health, the various studies of Fabaceae plant have been conducted, including the isolation and screening of biological activity of purified compounds. In this article, we briefly summarizes selected topics on the chemical structure, biosynthesis, biological activities, and the functions of Fabaceae flavonoids.
