This article examines the effect of social assistance budget on incumbent regional head votes and the role of political competition on the relationship between social assistance budget and incumbent regional head votes. The samples are the regencies and cities in Indonesia that conducts local election followed by the incumbent regent or major. The result found that directly, social assistance budget affects the incumbent votes in the local election. It also found that when there is political competition, the influence of social assistance budget has a negative effect on the incumbent votes
